This yellow number had a brilliant gunshot effect which looked very convincing from a distance. On closer inspection I discovered to my disdain that the vehicle hadn't made a heroic trek across hostile terrain but had merely been the subject of an artistic spree of sticker attachment. One of the things I love about the Renault 4 is that it inspires people by its very originality to do creative things with its image. You don't see such things being done to the average BMW, because their owners have no sense of fun.

Above, a van that looks not dissimilar to another I once saw at a garage in Vichy. I had stopped off there during my French trip in 2005 to have some repairs done, and by good fortune discovered that the owner had his own quatrelle that he used as his mobile mechanic vehicle. It was painted very much in the same way.

Below, a trio of '70s (or possibly late '60s) models that many cite as the most aesthetically pleasing amongst the standard editions, in part due to the second generation chrome bumper and other shiny trim.
