Rear view of Angel in Clapham, London in 1999

The only time I slept in Angelica was on this occasion, whilst in Clapham, London, following a heavy night out in 1999. I'd been to see the legendary Jimmy Smith at the Jazz Café in Camden with my brother. We chilled out around Regents Park afterwards and walked up Primrose Hill to look at the view over London. Having sobered up I drove up to Parliament Hill shortly before dawn, then wondered why there were several other people hanging around at 5am. We then realised it was the spring equinox, conveniently, and so decided to shoot across the Thames to Greenwich for an alternative view from up on the hill by the observatory. It was quite strange being practically the only car in London that Sunday morning, having the city to ourselves and heading across Tower Bridge alone. However, by the time we got to Greenwich it was tipping down and there was no great sunrise to see.

I dropped my brother off at the railway station, and I decided to stop an extra night in London with my friend in Clapham. She wasn't heading back from Brighton until later that evening, so I parked opposite her home and covered the car windows with flowery throw-overs, as can be seen in the pictures. It wasn't the most comfortable experience I've ever known - kipping on the reclined passenger seat in a sleeping bag - but I was knackered. When I awoke in the afternoon, it was a splendid day outside, so I slid a side vent open, still with the sheets pinned over the windows. Some little git child came along with a pole and stabbed it through, thinking he was going to break into the car; he had quite a shock when he saw me sat inside. I'd be interested to know who it was that passed by in a yellow R4. A lady drove past as I was locking the car, but I didn't notice until she was around the corner and out of reach. It was a nice-looking, well kept Renault 4, and would have been in the vicinity of Abbeville Road, near Clapham Common. Will this small mystery ever be solved?
