Fons Robbé from the Netherlands sent these pics in early 2002 of his rather special R4. He writes:
'Here are some pics of a Renault 4 Safari (1975). The engine is a Renault 5 Alpine, tuned 115hp. It's got 4 disc brakes, powered, 5 gears, Ford V6 carburettor. Speed??? Not important but it goes over 190km/ph, so fasten your seatbelts.'
I told him the Safari model has become my favourite, and he adds:
'About the R4 Safari, I can only tell you that it was made in 1976, 1977 and 1978 (R1126). The R1126 was also the R4L and the R4TL. So in 1979 the R4 Safari was not produced anymore. The R1126 went on under the name R4L and R4TL. The total numbers made of the R1126 Safari is unknown by me, (sorry). So it will be very difficult to find one, because they existed only a short period of time.'
You can find a couple more pictures of his car in the 40th anniversary Arnhem report on this site (parts 6 and 22), which also contains another pair of Safari models pictured by the windmill (part A). You may also notice one earlier in this People's Pics section (number PP42). Suddenly they're everywhere!
