Manuel Seren sent in these three pictures of his car. He comments:

'I bought this car in july 20th of 2002. It´s a 86 GTL and needs some work and time to repair its rot :( , but the motor runs fine :). The first photo of the car is in a camping in Gualeguaychú, where I spent my last vacations. The second one shows you how tired I was after driving 240km (non-stop). Here in Argentina, the R4 GTLs don´t have seats so comfortable like their brothers made in Europe... And the third and last photo was taken at a meeting of the Argentinian R4 Club in november 15th of 2002. Thanks for all!'

I sent Manuel a smug reply, pointing out how I'd driven more than a poxy 240km non-stop before myself, but I misunderstood the point slightly. Manuel says:

'When I wrote you 'how tired I was after driving 240km', I was trying to make you understand that the front original seats of the car don´t have adjustable backrest. No blue/red or beige/brown checkered covers... the covers are made of "cuerina", some kind of low quality leather. There are other differences between argentinian and rest of the world´s R4GTLs: rear screen demister, reverse lights, digital clock or radio were not even optional equipment (here is a very basic car in security and comfort). And the engine is different too! Let´s see:
1st serie: Renault 4 L (1963-1969). The known 845cc engine (the same all over the world)
2nd serie: Renault 4 S (1969-1984). It has a 1020cc engine which is the known 1397cc Renault engine (R5, R9, R11, R12, R18, etc...) reducing the cubic capacity.
3rd serie: Renault 4 GTL (1984-1986). It´s 1118cc, the same engine which equipped the first argentinian Renault 6. I send you the technical specifications:

Renault 4 GTL cubic capacity: 1118 cc.
Bore x stroke: 68 x 77 mm.
Compression ratio: 9.5:1
Max power: 41 CV @ 5000 rpm
Max speed: 130 km/h (81 mph)
Acceleration 0-100km/h: 17 sec.
227000 (including the vans and pickups) R4s was the whole production here in Argentina, but only 6727 units of R4 GTL were made between 29th september of 1984 and 22nd august of 1986.'

I queried the size of this 1118cc engine in the GTL, considering most familiar versions in Europe at least that I know of are 1108cc. Manuel replies:

'I´m sure the cubic capacity of my R4GTL is 1118cc. You can find out this because of the measures of the bore and the stroke of each cylinder: Cubic capacity = (Bore/2)^2 * PI * Stroke * Number of cylinders
1118.55 cm3 = (6.8cm/2)^2 * 3.1415927 * 7.7 * 4
Some people here in Argentina say the last 10 or 20 R4GTLs made here had the 1397cc. engine (same as argentinian R12) because "Renault Argentina" didn´t have more 1.1 litre engine. I didn´t see any R4 1.4 here, but maybe...'
