Just to complete your Renault 4 experience, I've collected some sound clips which give you the chance to enjoy a drive in an R4 from the comfort of your armchair. Apologies for the size of the files, they're as small as I can make them without sacrificing sound quality. You'll need an mp3 player to hear them. If you don't currently have one installed, I'd recommend Winamp, which is now freeware, and can be downloaded from http://www.winamp.com

All clips are mono 64kbit/sec, 44,100Hz, and were recorded with a simple cheap mic and portable cassette inside the car (as you'll hear for yourself). The sounds are somewhat ambient; if you're after quick thrills you'd be better off at Disney.

	the engine 174kb / 22s	As with the rest of the clips, the engine noise is slightly marred by the sound of the fan, which comes on as soon as the engine is turned, due to a temporary fix for a coolant failure.

	R4 goes to the park 2.56mb / 5m 28s	You'd have to be very stupid or very bored to bother downloading this one, but there's something very satisfying about the sound of the engine filling your living room for 5 1/2 minutes. (park noises not included)

	squeaky brakes 484kb / 1m 2s	Those brakes aren't mine! Honest. I'm clearly getting desperate for ideas here. Well how many sounds can you really get from a Renault 4? How about honking the horn? Hmm, see the next clip.

	On the gravel 790kb / 1m 41s	Listen carefully and you'll even hear me sliding the windows open. And then it's off across a sea of uneven 1ft deep loose gravel, a feat most modern cars would find difficult. Hear the tyres plough through undeterred.

Ok, so they all sound pretty much the same. It's the thought that counts.
