Renault 4-Play: where are you? It's nearly half a year since I added anything to this history page, how dreadful! Well, visitors will note that there are still regular updates made to this site in the usual places, such as the gallery, classified ads, guestbook, etc. Other sections have been neglected a little as I'm trying to focus on adding the things that people like most and return to this site to see, such as more R4 pictures and updated R4 adverts. I know from my weekly webstats digest that these are the things that keep visitors coming back, and so because of my limited time to devote to the site due to ongoing work commitments, I'm trying to keep things ticking over as far as I can. At some future point I do hope to overhaul large parts and implement new features that will serve Renault 4-Play's audience better. In the meantime, I'll just wrap up 2006 with the usual season's greetings to all. I shall be on vacation until the new year so it is unlikely that any new items will be added until then. Those of you seeking belated pressies may find the 2007 calendar - on sale at the gift shop - quenches your monthly visual desires, or those of another 4 fan. May 2007 bring many happy R4 motoring experiences for you all.

A Portuguese R4 meeting is planned for next month, according to the following details sent to me by Tiago Martins: 'Hi my dear friends, I want to invite you to our big party of 4l classic car on 12 & 13 August! It´s in Portugal (Requengos de Monsaraz), 180km distance of Lisbon. We hope that you can appear and have some good moments with us! Our site is www.amigos4l.pt.vu - sorry, it´s only in Portuguese, but you can see the photos of our beautiful cars.' One other small note: in the last poll you decided that the activity you would most like to perform in a Renault 4 was to join the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix. The next vote asks perhaps the dullest question yet: What is the best position for the front number plate? If you're compelled to respond, visit the Vote 4 It! page in the articles section, or miss your chance forever more!

The R4 run in Kent on 28th May was a unique occurrence for UK owners, perhaps the first such major event organised in this country. Up to sixteen Renault 4s were present, in addition to some other Renault models. I've written a full article, complete with photos and videos, which can be found on the stary story page of the articles section (number SS6). As usual, if anybody else has something interesting to contribute, then please get in touch.

A reminder for UK owners (and perhaps a few others in northern Europe) that the Renault Owners Club of Great Britain have a run occurring on Sunday 28th May 2006, with an emphasis on 45 years of the R4, though all Renaults are welcome. Start point is at the coast-bound services on the M2 (between J4&5) at 11am, taking a touristic route across the Weald of Kent. Those wishing to enter in the spirit of things French style can join in a 'guess the average combined mileage' of all the R4s that turn up on the day and MAKE the finish. The fee per person to enter your guess is a bottle of wine and the person closest to the correct average mileage wins all the bottles. Cars in kilometres are calculated at 1 mile =1.6 kilometres. Derek Flavell of Renospeed fame is coordinating the R4 effort for the Renault Owners Club and Liam Jones is going to try to muster up some members from the Renault Classic Car Club, but anyone is welcome to turn up to have a chat, maybe swap some spares and just meet other like minded individuals. Derek can be contacted on 07816 586642, or work on 020 8694 1435, and Liam is best via e-mail (louise.riding at btopenworld.com) or evenings on 01491 411564. Please note any R4 is welcome from a polished up show winner to a faithful battle scarred everyday hack. A few other minor points about website updates: users of browsers other than Internet Explorer should find that the guestbook maps feature now works properly, with all entries showing up as flashing dots. A bug previously made this non-functional in some browsers. In addition, some visitors may have found that the RealMedia video streams, including the high quality 40th anniversary film, were unavailable recently. This was an error with the files caused by changes to the site's file structure, but it has now been rectified. Due to my adoption of a new web design program, a few minor changes might be noticed which could affect the visual style of some features. If anybody notices any small errors or features not working, please inform me.

Just as three years ago I paid a visit to Renault UK's HQ in Rickmansworth, my work engagements this week took me on a trip to Renault's Formula 1 base in rural Oxfordshire. The plant is a strange place located in the middle of nowhere. For client confidentiality reasons I can't reveal what I was doing there, although it was nothing too exciting! My contact did take me on a quick tour of the building before I left, which gave me a glimpse of the F1 chassis and other parts undergoing preparations for this year's grand prix races. Lots of men in white coats busied around doing mysterious things. Since it is courteous to wear a suit to most companies I visit, I at least tried to co-ordinate my attire with Renault's colour scheme of blue and yellow (or in my case gold), and even dug out a tie with a diamond pattern to finish it off! This, along with my visitor's badge, can be seen in the adjoining photos.

Two new landmarks for this site at the beginning of 2006; the 100,000th visitor to the website has finally arrived, and the count reaches two hundred for the number of photo entries in the people's pics section. Add those to the tally of other pictures around the site and I'm somewhere on the way to capturing the eight million or so that were ever produced! Enjoy 2006 - the 45th anniversary of the R4!
