Message from the
editor 26/10/05:
For the last 18 months I have been requesting info from anybody who is
able to provide major restoration services for the Renault 4. I had
almost given up on this, but it seems that finally miracles really have
occurred. Initially, I discovered that replacement floor pans for the
R4 were still available from Whitehouse Renault - http://www.whitehouserenault.co.uk/
(locations around SE England), and had a quote in early 2004 of
£224.15 including carriage (in the UK) for these parts. The
chassis, floor pans, suspension mounting points and surrounding area
are the things which consistently produce problems before anything
else, and vast numbers of the cars are being scrapped due to failures
in these places. I asked if anybody was competent in performing
extensive repairs of this nature, i.e. removing the body from the
chassis (where necessary) and rebuilding the underside safely, reliably
and effectively.
1) The first update in
August 2005 came from a reader who advised that Frank Suarez in
Stockwell - Tel: 020 7627 1108
- has done complete rebuilds of R4s. Renault made him a new R4 engine
for one job as they had none in stock! It may be worth ringing to
enquire if you are wanting any major restoration jobs done. I would be
grateful for any comments or opinions from anybody who does.

Then in October 2005 I was contacted by a reader who notified me of
another option. An R4 enthusiast in south-east London is now dedicated
to restoring and rebuilding the cars, and is specialising in this! I
never truly believed any such operation would come to fruition in the
UK but now it has. You can find out more details on his website, at http://www.renospeed.co.uk/
Even body-off rebuilds may be a possibility, so there is still hope for
all those UK models still on the roads, and it may be feasible even for
owners abroad to make enquiries. If you know any further details of
other services, please still get in touch.
