I love my R4 very much because I found it much more stronger than latest Japan model cars particularly in my country.
#394: miguel imus, Mexico, 2006-11-05
I bought my first 1978 R4 and I literally pushed it home three miles with my own hands! I bought a 1972 donor car for the motor and transmission and the interior. I am getting back to working on it now that the weather is cooler here in the desert. miguel

Nice to see so many folks who enjoy driving the Renault 4. I have a 1970 Fourgonette, which is waiting to be restored, and a 1983 convertible which is currently waiting for a new roof. Thanks a lot for this wonderful page. Volker
#383: João Graça, Portugal, 2006-08-01
Hi my name is joão (john) and i'm from Olhao, Algarve which is in Portugal. I just got my first car and guess what.. it's a renault 4. It was my dad's car but now its mine. She's a 1988 year old savane and my dad has it since then, so to me the r4 it's like a brother and i will never sell it (i hope). This site is the coolest and it's well done, and here it goes a little thing that i made in 3d animation (see link on world map entry); it's a flying renault 4 and it's a perfect replica of my savane

My R4 F4 is the best, performed like a jeep in the desert, carried as many kids on birthday parties as possible and is now resting and waiting for a few new parts
#380: Kjell Johnsen, Norway, 2006-05-12
We have two R4 (1978-blue metallic and 1979-dark brown metallic) and both were restored last year. The brown is used for transport by my wife, and the blue one is just for fun.

#376: odile Keane, Kenya, 2006-03-18
Yeah! Just re-discovered this site! We have a very old Roho, that has been in the family and used as a run-about car for years on the most appalling roads! (Kenya) My brother is now using it! In the '70s he drove in one down to South Africa.
#375: Mike Evans, UK, 2006-03-10
Very funny site, but not much new material of late. Don't give up - give us more. I particularly liked 'Tomatoes in sandwiches - whose idea was that?' By the way, I'd love to own a R4, but I'm no mechanic. Is that a non-starter?
webmaster comments: I'm not in any way a mechanic myself, in fact I know hardly anything useful about car maintenance or restoration, but it won't put me off owning an R4. You just need to ensure you find one in good mechanical condition in the first instance, and preferably a later model which won't give you so much grief when it comes to tracking down spares. Leave the earlier classics for the real mechanical nuts. As for new material, I'm doing my best to keep the Gallery and other pages ticking over with fresh material every week or so, but you probably won't see so much in the line of tomato remarks or general life gripes. They kind of dried up when the enthusiasm of having a website where you can spout off to the world at large about anything became nothing more than a chore, some years ago. The site is still due for a general makeover but I've also given up making promises as to when, as it seems to act as a form of curse each time I do so. Don't worry though, Renault 4-Play isn't giving up yet.
#374: Arne Rummelhoff-Larsen, Norway, 2006-03-01
I am rebuilding a Renault 4 TL, 1974 model, green metallic (original color) with my own specifications. I will come back to you with pictures, when my project is finish.

I have a '71 4L, bought in '97 in order to take part in the jubilee in Paris the following year. I drove 4s frequently in the seventies, and was impressed. Still am. This one seems willing to go on for ever. I'm a member of the Norwegian Renault club.

#362: Bruce Piggott, Australia, 2005-12-23
Currently own two R12's which have been excellent. I've had several R12's and a couple of R16's and R20's too, but fondly remember my R6 and now keen to own a R4 since they were re-introduced in the '80s. There is only one in Hobart still running, it is in good condition and I would like to own it...just got to find where it lives.
#361: Liam Jones, UK, 2005-12-17

#344: Margrit Herfkens, UK, 2005-05-01
I once had a R4 and it was taken away from me by a garage, it simply died and I never forgotten the pleasure of its company on the road. My dream is to find another friend to join me on my trips on the country roads. Can somebody out there help me?
#343: Ian Milnes, UK, 2005-04-30
Your site is and always has been superb. Sorry for not contributing as yet, hope to in the future. Ian. (brought up in R4's and besotted ever since). Current R4's GTL and 4f4(LHD)
#342: Jack Crisp, UK, 2005-04-22
Am i a renault 4 owner? I was and i will be. My baby, Doris, was destroyed in a car accident and i am in mourning until i can get another. It was my first car and i will never get anything other than a renault 4 as long as i live. I was sold from the very first moment i sat in her. We are very lucky in Guernsey as we are not subject to the MOT so a large amount of failed cars from England come over here to pass away in retirement, away from motorways and such. I look forward to getting another and re-joining the renault-4 global community. Great web-site by the way.
#341: sam, UK, 2005-04-15
i want to buy a renault 4 any for sale?
webmaster comments: Take a look in my Classifieds section - there's one being sold right now (albeit requiring attention) in your home town of Worthing!
#340: Karl Taylor, UK, 2005-04-11
Just come back from a holiday in Croatia (Umag in the Istria region) and thought I'd let you know that there are thousands of R4s over there (you see at least 20 a day) so if you need bits then Croatia has to be the place

El primer y mejor auto que tuvimos mi mujer y yo. No solo es comodo, sino que, ademas del equipaje, pudo trasladar todas nuestras ilusiones, sueños y esperanzas. Realmente lo extraño y si pudiera, compraria otro.

#325: Rastko, Serbia, 2004-11-24
I have a 14.5-year-old R4. It was made in Novo Mesto, Slovenia (at that time it was in Yugoslavia), with a 1108 cm3 engine. Apart from recent problems with corrosion (esp. gearbox carrier), this car has never let me down.
#324: Choop, Serbia, 2004-11-21
Hello there, what's up? Why don't you make this a messageboard? Or add forum to site? My 4tl spec is running good, but i'm going to have to replace the carburator and do some bodywork.:] I also broke gearbox handle, but fixed it right away. You know, that pipe curved S? under the hood.... :] Greetz! Choop
webmaster comments: I do intend to add some interactivity to this site in the future, but it's a huge and complex task to install a really decent forum. Anybody can set up some crappy simple forum or one run in conjunction with some other service which scatters adverts everywhere, but the sort of thing I want and need will take much time to plan, and I have no time at present to even get started. The other problem, and the reason I've never implemented one to date, is that from observing countless other similar messageboards, they soon become full of complete horseshit, input by all kinds of undesirables from around the world, much of it spam, advertising and other rubbish. It requires constant moderation and maintenance to keep in order, and plagues the website for all the time that nobody is bothering to remove it all, so since I'm barely at home these days I wouldn't have much opportunity to administer everything. A forum or other message area will hopefully materialize one day, but don't expect anything too soon.
#323: Alex, Canada, 2004-11-12
bravo pour ta page
#322: Rutten Chris, Belgium, 2004-11-01
I own a R4 F6 from the year 85 with original 18500 km in perfect condition.
#321: Andy The Candy, Austria, 2004-10-30
Hello, R4 friends! After looking for a suitable R4 for some months, I am a happy owner of a 87 R4TL, in good condition, besides some necessary welding at the rear bottom... This car is one of the last ones sold here, and it's got the 956cc engine (the same block like the 1108 GTL, but smaller liners), which was sold in Austria around 50 times only... If I can spare some time, I'll send some photos fo Ferdinand on our forst long tour, 1900 km from Vienna to Croatia (which is, by the way, a R4 paradise). I also have a very beautiful R16 from 1966, and I run the above linked R16 page. I would be pleased if you would surf in and take a look (and don't worry about the German language, the English version is right on the way...) Best wishes to all R4 drivers, and keep on going!
#320: deray, France, 2004-10-27
je suis très heureux de découvrir votre site, la 4L que je possède va se sentir un peu moins seule! merci de lui redonner une famille

Just got this marvellous motor. Seems to have got named Arthur. First longish run Monday - can't wait.
#316: Matt Tritt, USA, 2004-09-29
OK, so I don't own one now. However, while stationed in Heilbronn, Germany I DID back in 67. I ordered it from the factory with US required equipment (bumper over-riders bars front and back, special turn signals and headlights) plus, they threw in a sunroof and deluxe fabric seats! God what a great car! In 68, when I brought the car back to California, I had the only one in the U.S. I do wish that I had waited a year for the 4 speed transmission to come out though. That was my one and only complaint of this car - no gear for mountain driving. I originally bought this car because I couldn't get a 2CV, too long a wait (like a year!), plus it had a bit more power and carrying capacity. Of the over 40 cars that I've owned, and there were some really good ones, the R4 still is my favorite and I wish they still made them today. Maybe with airbags! I envy the access to my favorite vehicles you have in the UK and Europe. Everything over this side of the pond is boring and over-regulated, not to mention the idiot that's in the White House. Cheers, Matt Tritt.
webmaster comments: I was over your way the other week, including a short hop to Arizona. It's true, all the cars you have there are big and bland, and there's a bewildering quantity of pick-ups everywhere you look. I had to drive some ridiculously sporty bright yellow Toyota Matrix Automatic (not my choice), although I must admit it was easy enough to handle. I stuck out like a sore thumb and it appeared that nobody else in the US drove a yellow car. You sure have some strange laws of the road there. How was I to know whilst sitting at a red light in the right lane that all the cars beeping me behind were suggesting I legally skip the red light and turn right? And what's happened to all those big flat square American cars we see in the movies and which I expected to see around every corner? There were hardly any, being replaced mainly it seems by absurdly over-sized Dodge people-carriers and gas-guzzling trucks. Of course, I didn't spot any Renault 4s, although since I was stationed in Texas most of the time, I wasn't too far away from the one R4 that I believe still exists in America, in Houston (see the very first People's Pic - number PP1 in the Gallery - for more about that). What really shocked me was the way car culture is so heavily ingrained into society, and how I was made to feel like some social inadequate if I dared walk on the sidewalk even to the next block (a lot of the time there was no sidewalk anyway), or how I would be derided by locals in Dallas for daring to take the new tram into town, even though it was very clean and efficient and clearly a way forward. My experiences of America were at best mixed, but it's good to hear from folks like yourself who still have an interest in the R4s. A shame though, as you say, about that twit you have in the White House. Thankfully, I met many Texans, believe it or not, who agree with such sentiments. There is hope!
#315: Patrick McCool, UK, 2004-09-24
I lived in the pyrennees for 2.5 yrs, bought it there, one previous owner who had done 28,010 kms in 26 years!! (True!) It is baby blue, a bit scraped, but I love it. Perfect for London, and all the sleeping policemen... Good luck to all R4 owners and drivers.

Driving a Renault4 always puts a smile on my face! As exceeding 55mph or overtaking is never an option, I always arrive at my destination feeling calm and rather sorry the journey is over.
#311: Roger Barnes, USA, 2004-09-03
Hi My father in Nicaragua in 1975 purchased a R4 that was 4 wheel drive. I will never forget it, i learned to drive in it, at the beaches, in forest access roads, amazing offroad abilities, oh and by the way, great website! Thanks (4) the memories......

does anyone know where to get the french style pressed number plates made? Is there a supplier in the UK?
webmaster comments 2009-11-20: Five years too late with this response, but for anybody else who reads this with the same interest, I recently discovered a supplier in the UK and Ireland called Craigsplates, who have purchased an original French number plate maker and can provide these.

Wh@ a gr8 site i had a couple of 4s in my youth and they were a joy. A trip around the site with all the stories pics and obvious love for the 4 including the obvious distress upon their demise has just got me thinking again, maybe it is time to re-visit the joys of the 4 ... Phil
