You're THE BEST site of the RENAULT 4. In the future I will send you photos of my '85 R4 F6.
#299: Jon Wills, UK, 2004-06-24
Had a 1982 van that I got in the South of France, despite trying to write it off on a couple of occasions it was always fixable and did the 1000 mile journey from the French Alps to Cornwall on a couple of occasions until finally being laid to rest in Cornwall in 2001. R.I.P.
#298: Peter T, Belgium, 2004-06-21
19 years ago it was my first car. I crashed it and bought another R4. Now 6 months ago I bought a 1991 950cc TL for a restauration project but I could not wait to ride it so last week I bought a 1991 1100cc GTL at last I feel happy again.
#297: Mat Smith, Australia, 2004-06-21
Strangest damn thing. After living in Sydney for 14 years, I had a dream last night that I bought an old R4 for $50 (about 20 pounds). I have no idea why!! Hopped on the net to find some pics and discovered this fantastic site. Found myself thoroughly absorbed by the tales and photos of Nicolexia and Angelica. Keep up the good work! If I see any R4s down under, I'll try and get a pic. Cheers, MAT.
#296: Jimmy Grieve, UK, 2004-06-17
had one in kenya and one in UK
#295: Jorge Cunha, Portugal, 2004-06-07
It's good to see that many portuguese are now crazy with the R4's. Until now these cars were working...I owned just R4's in my life driver. First a R4 F4 GTL of 1982 and now a R4 TL of 1989 who made the "4L TROPHY" in Marrocos in 2003! Still running with power!!! I call it "R4 Desert Trophy". Just to inform the R4 fans that in 12th, 13th of JUNE will happen a great INTERNATIONAL MEETING of RENAULT 4 in PORTUGAL - Town of Reguengos de Monsaraz. Can you imagine Portugal by R4?? Rock in Rio, EURO 2004,..., and much more!!
#294: Mike, USA, 2004-06-07
Looking for information for buying a R4 here in Anchorage... USA

#292: robert, Hungary, 2004-05-14
hungarian renault4 club
webmaster comments: Another of those strange coincidences: I was passing through your city of Budapest just hours after you signed this book. I spotted a few Renault 4s on the way too, I wonder if one of them was you! I also saw a couple of gleaming red ones down in Székesfehérvár where I was working. However, Trabants clearly rule the roads over there, I must have spotted several hundred during the week, and they were always either faded beige or faded blue.
update 2009-11-20: The original link supplied with this entry no longer works. I've updated it to the current R4 Klub Hungary that I know of (see world map entry), but whether this site is associated with the original poster I'm not sure.
#291: joao faisca, Portugal, 2004-05-12

#290: Gilles Cautres, France, 2004-05-10

hello every body! More info for the mysterious quatrelle's garage in my page. Bye! Alexeï
webmaster comments 2009-11-20: Wish I'd rechecked this page a few months ago. I drove right through Mazamet on my way back from Spain in Reflexia. Not sure if the garage still exists but would have paid a visit if I'd seen it.

Fun little site. I have fond memories of 4Ls as I grew up in the country in France and everyone who didn't have a small Citroen (my Granpa had an AMI8, the neighbourhood had 2CVs, Dyanes and Visas as well) used to have a 4L, usually an F4 (my uncle and aunt did). Allez, bonne continuation et a bientot!
#271: Marlie, Netherlands, 2004-02-11
Hello there! I'm a student from Inholland, communication. This moment we have a car project going on: We need to put a retro restyled brand on the market. Our group choosed the Renault4! I need some background info can somebody help me? For example, what type of person used to buy this car? When was the renault4 hype really hot? How much did it cost at that time (was it expensive compared to other cars?) What was the sphere / feeling around renault 4? Please email me if you can answer any of this questions! TNX a lot!
#270: sholto silvestri, UK, 2004-01-30
As a daily mercedes driver, its great to lose the boredom and get behind the wheel of Isabel the Gtl. Good luck with the website and all you non R4 owners get searching.
#269: Chris Edmunds, UK, 2004-01-29
I have an excellent Quatrelle(R4) LHD minus plastic strip on the side(ugh), have your Tee Shirt(bought by son, the joint owner), now where do I go for the R4 rally, can be UK or anywhere in Europe.
webmaster comments: Can't help you there I'm afraid, I couldn't organize a tupperware party in Buckingham Palace so I won't be arranging any R4 meetings personally. I'm aiming, however, to introduce some interactivity to this site at a later date where owners can discuss and share ideas, so something might happen one day. In the meantime, you could always hook up with either the Dutch or Portuguese R4 clubs and gatecrash one of their events, I'm sure they wouldn't mind a foreign intruder. The Portuguese are having many gatherings nowadays throughout the year. Ferries from the UK run from Portsmouth to Bilbao and it's not too much further on to Portugal from there. Adeus!
#268: Juan Pablo, Colombia, 2004-01-27
#267: Rod SHAW, UK, 2004-01-21

Nearly the end of 2003 and i would just like to thank Pete for his sterling work running this website. Seasonal greetings to everyone and never consider a modern car over the good old R4
webmaster comments: Flattery will get you nowhere, although I might now add that picture of yours before the end of the year.
#265: Dacha, Serbia, 2003-12-23
I got nostalgic while viewing your web site! Hello to all fans of R4 from Serbia, country with biggest number of R4 on the roads!

I live in a very rocky island in cape verde west africa. I own a white 1980 4TL, it never stops nevertheless the fields. It takes me everywhere on the islands, seasides or mountains, that's why I love my renault 4. great site.
#256: Anders Yttergren, Sweden, 2003-10-21
This was a good site. Unfortunately my car has been demolished at a junkyard for a few years ago. It was a yearmodel -74
#255: SM, Greece, 2003-10-18
About the "diamond" shaped hole, below the hood, You mentioned in one of texts: It was used for engine hand-start. Engine changed, but not the body, so the hole remained, collecting mud.
webmaster comments: that's strange as I was only reading that article again a couple of days ago, and I wondered if somebody would ever offer an explanation - thanks for the info (to the readers: this relates to an article in the Technique section regarding body preparation and repainting)
#254: Tom Ponsonby, UK, 2003-10-04
Looking at your site brought back so many memories. My first car was a 1982 4 GTL. Am definitely looking for another one now. If anyone knows of any for sale (1984 onwards) please let me know.
#253: Rich Hanlon, UK, 2003-10-03
Very interesting read - glad that somebody thinks of their 4 in the same way I think of my Fiat 126, which similarly never let me down in over five years of thrifty motoring. I now have a Morris 1000 which is shockingly unreliable at the moment, so hopefuuly back to some more basic motoring before long - another 126, a 4 or a 2CV perhaps... Brilliant website - love it!

#247: garrett, France, 2003-09-11

Live your R4 with joy!! Good trips!!!
#245: mitrowsky, Serbia, 2003-09-08
My first car is all white (with a little rust) R4 special, mfc 1981. It's so simple, but with a hole in the upper part of petrol tank. I only fill it with max. 12 lit.:))
#244: Otto, Spain, 2003-09-05
I was a proud driver of a "Cuatrolatas" since 1993 to 1999. It is the best machine I ever drive: strong, hard, easy...never failed.
#243: Daniel MAHY, France, 2003-09-03
Congratulation for your website and for 4L interest. For my side my mother had a 4L when I use it for driving training, then I had one when I was 22. Now 2 are (one GTL look like a new and one to be restored).
#242: cesar, Spain, 2003-08-30

#241: Dave Winspear, UK, 2003-08-25
Owned 1 GL and 1 GTL and 1 van ALL AT THE SAME TIME!! In the early 80's. Magnificent beasts cost an average of £100 each and just kept going. OK..OK.. I admit I had to pinch bits of 1 or the other from time to time. Still have the R4 Haynes manual in my library. I go to mainland Europe at least once a year in the hope of spotting 4's but sadly they are now becoming an endangered species. Just spent a whole week over there and only spotted one! Perhaps they are getting wilier and tend to lurk in obscure French barns?
#240: Remmert, UK, 2003-08-22
Hi, everybody! Fantastic website! Very inspiring seeing so many stories. Interesting that many people seem to be after parts and such. If only someone with a steady supply of parts would leave a message. Will post piccy as soon as I have it.
webmaster comments: if anybody does have a steady supply of parts please post them in the Classifieds section
#239: Michael Martin, Portugal, 2003-08-20
I am a proud owner of a 1123 R4 from 1980 that i bought in junk in pretty bad conditions. Still got to reach the junkyard in order to disassemble parts from others, trying to give life back to "Quatrolatas" the name we gentle gave in portugal for 4l, that could be translate as "four steel plates", because of its simplicity. My car as been restored by me, since i am a mechanic, and later MOT, and has been driven since one year ago, making about 2500km of fun, enjoyment and proud. There are plenty of spares in Portugal, new, and used, and lots of cheap, damaged and abandoned 1123, 1128, FV, etc. that still made them a very afordable everyday car.
#238: Carlos Oliveira, Portugal, 2003-08-19
Olá. Once again i was here to see the news about this great car. In Portugal we have a new site for the best car of the world. keep the god work. Abraços desde Portugal, Carlos Oliveira

M*g* entries are NOT a private joke. It means that this guestbook is being targeted by 4*9 scammers. The email addresses are being harvested so that 4*9 scammers from ****** can send out scam emails.
webmaster comments: Do not be over-alarmed. This message refers to the fact that persons leaving their email address on any publicly accessible resource are prone to receiving unsolicited email. Other Internet users and organisations may run automated programs to collect this information. I had been aware since launching this site that such a problem might one day arise. My own email address is shown on this site and elsewhere on the net, but I generally receive a trickle of spam each day, which could come from many sources. Please do not assume, therefore, that any spam you receive is a direct consequence of this guestbook. Unfortunately, the number of irrelevant entries being sent to me has increased over time, and many have not been printed. For these reasons, I have made certain changes to the guestbook and other areas of the site. Email links are no longer clickable, and @ symbols have been replaced. To send email to other users, one must now type addresses manually and correct the deliberate error. Persons signing the guestbook have always had the choice of whether or not to display their email address, and this remains unchanged. The facility has not been removed entirely, since many people find it a helpful resource and have made useful contacts via this site. I have prepared a page of related information, which is clearly linked at the point where people sign the guestbook. I advise everybody who uses the guestbook to read this page of rules, and if anyone wishes to remove their own email address then please contact me. Note that the original wording of this entry has itself been edited so as to remove certain references that may be collected by the very people this policy is intended to discourage. The sender has requested their own address remains intact.

I just found your site. Congratulations! I would like some technical help sorting an (Ignition?) problem on our 1968 4L (6V system). Is there an email message board that might be able to help? He passed his MoT today but we had to push him onto the test ramp after a 10 mile drive to the test station!
webmaster comments: you can place a message in my Classifieds section requesting some help, in the 'information and advice' category.

So R4 is part of our familiy, so I am just continuing the story. I like the car. It is over its 318.000 kms. Greetings from Hungary to all R4 fans! Csaba

Well this is a bit weird, I'm signing my own guestbook for the second time. It's not because I'm desperate for friends but rather so I can update my world map entry since I moved last year. And also so I can have one last rant while I'm still in my twenties, as I turn 30 on Monday (you can send all the good wishes / snide comments you like but I won't read them until next month when I return home). Yes me, the mouthy webmaster, will become middle-aged in just a few days. Life, and this site, may never be the same again. Maybe I'll remove all the hippy graphics, make them all grey instead and take up golf. As from tomorrow, I won't be here for a while, and as you'll doubtless be sick to death of reading elsewhere on this site, there'll be nothing happening to these pages during my holidays. I hate birthdays so much, I decided to flit off abroad for this one. With any luck, I'll have plenty of Renault 4 pictures and other experiences to bore you to tears with when I get back. Enjoy your summer!
#221: ADNANE, Morocco, 2003-05-28

I want one!! Still remember fondly the brand new 1984 A Reg Bright Red GTL we had - died on a Welsh mountain after more than 100k miles in 5 years. Drive a boring Ford Mondeo estate at the moment - anyone want to swap?

Hi Pete. Have been in touch before since buying a 1965 R4 late last year. Thought I would register in the guest book so that we can get another dot in Australia on the world map! Wonderful website;- but only what the R4 deserves.

Hallo Leute, hi friends of R4!
#214: Mike, USA, 2003-05-06
I owned a 1976 Renault R4 while a student in Germany from 1983 to 1985. I could fix everything myself, wish I could do that on my "modern" cars.
#213: Gregory Francis, Sri Lanka, 2003-05-05
how can i join your renault club - please send details - best regards gregory
webmaster comments: you must first prove your allegiance to the R4 by filling it with baked beans and driving it to Nepal, whereupon you will be greeted by the Quatrelle Master. You must perform whatever duty he asks of you and offer him the gift of your body for 36 hours. He will propose a duel, with the prize for the winner being one night in Romford with his wife. Only then upon your victory can you consider yourself a true member of the exclusive Renault 4-Play club. I will pop the application in the post. Alternatively, you may wish to opt for the more common, passive form of membership, which involves simply looking at this site from time to time, wishing it was actually a club that you could join, and being sorely tempted to buy the entire set of gifts available from my boutique.

hello, yes its the same anna from crewe again with a new email address. still completely enamoured by the website and on the hunt for my 4th r4.
#206: Mozza, Australia, 2003-04-04
Marvellous! My grandparents owned 2 R4's back in the 60's and 70's. Though I never rode in these cars I saw pictures of them and I have always wanted an R4. Both grandparents loved their Renaults and couldn't say enough good things about them. R4's are REALLY rare in Australia as they were only marketed in small numbers in the 1960's. Nobody imports these cars (Deux Cheveaux are preferred by importers) which is a damn shame 'cuz the dry climate is kind to cars. Keep up the GREAT WORK! Mozza!

Just agreed to buy a R4 from a local old guy here in N. France. I have been a fan of these little beauties for some time and now at Last...Yippeeee!! The car itself is a van style R4 6hp in Cream. It has been garaged for ever so no Rust and it sounds...well just dreamy!!! I may need a bit of techno info at some stage so if anyone has any helpful hints on running one or advice for a new and happy owner, please do get in touch. As for now, I just cant wait to pootle around the french countryside this summer. Much as I love this little baby, I must admit for long journeys I intend to keep my limited edition ML Mercedes Brabus...But that does mean I can keep the mileage low! Ok I'll shut up now...I just cant wait. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any comments...
