GTL restoration photos
by Andrew McGraa, 2001-03-22 and 2003-03-22

Here are some pictures of the restoration of two GTL models, sent by Andrew McGraa from Penzance, England. These initial images show the reconstruction of a September 1986, D reg, red GTL.

Some months on, and more pictures have arrived of the restoration work on this car. This first one shows some considerable welding work on the chassis, not dissimilar to that undertaken on my own car (see previous article in this section).

Work at this stage was still a bit 'up in the air'....

And here's the guy that did all the work.... (well, maybe). This picture also appears on the Babies page in the Playroom.

More photos of the fully restored car can be found on the People's Pics page of the Gallery (number PP67).

In early 2003, Andrew McGraa contacted me again with photos of another from his collection of Renault 4s that he had been tackling down at his garage in Cornwall, England. This time it's his blue GTL, which bears all the typical signs of ageing.

He writes: 'Have never taken the body off the chassis before and don't believe anyone if they say it's easy. Even with a selection of 2 poster ramps and all the space you need... Not looking forward to putting it back on. I have finished the welding (well not me - one of my staff), undersealed all the underside, sound proofed the inner floor. Going to put the rear axle on this weekend. The engine is completely stripped down, bare block etc, new shells, seal, timing chain and sprockets... valves reground... don't know if it will start... haha... should be like a new one when it's finished and ready for sale maybe??'
