Hello!! I'm Júlio from Lisbon. Once, i was a gelous owner of a beautiful R4 GTL. Unfortunately i had to sell it. But now i am looking for another one, with the precious help of Fernando Palma and João Seabra. Great site. Congratulations for the Arnhem Report. Best Regards, Júlio
#99: Choop, Serbia, 2001-11-12
Hey!!! Coolest site :) I'm proud R4 TL special (february 1980) owner, and I really love my car. It was purchased by my father, then engine destroyed by my mother (she managed to burn two cylinders), restaurated, and three days ago hurt by me. I hit new Mercedes C sportcoupe from the back (hey it was raining, his one tire is as wide as all 4 of mine together, and i do not have ABS =]). My 'little green dragon' is pretty ok, but wires are all burnt. there was short circuit at right headlight (stupid Mercedes =], so strong rear bumper).... Well, I'm a guest to this site! Ain't I? So why shouldn't I? :) Greetz to all QUATTRO lovers and owners. IT'S IMMORTAL !!!
webmaster comments: I'm glad that of all the cars you could have chosen to smash into, it was a Mercedes - keep it up!

Hey! very cool site. the only one i've seen cares so much about the greatest car ever. I own an 87 R-4 GTL, originally came with a 1022cc engine, but has been converted to a 1300cc engine, also has a ported and polished head, 4 in-line Keihin Motrocycle Carburetors, and some more stuff, will be sending pics to you soon. do you know or have heard about this type of "tunned" R-4's? thnx a lot and will be visitng this site again soon. I voted for you.

Wonderful place!! I have a red R4 (1984) and now i am interested in buying an older one. Long live to all R4 around the world!! Anyone such interested in R4 as me, please write to me!! (awful english, isn't it?) Me gustaría contactar con algún fanático del cuatro latas como yo, escribidme!!
#96: Folkert Sikkema, Netherlands, 2001-11-01
Hi. I was noticed by the dutch R4 club on a story about the 40 years Renault 4 Event in Arnhem, Holland and guess what... I found my own Renault 4 with a little story (Arnhem part 9). I will explain some more: The engine and gearbox are from a Renault 5 Alpine Turbo. All petrol stuff is removed / deleted and an LPG injection system is controlling the (high) fuel needs of the car. Also a big intercooler is mounted and it has a little high turbo pressure. So, it is going fast! More info at: http://folkert.fullspeed.to/r4at/r4at.html Greetings from Holland, Folkert.
#95: nick glenn, Canada, 2001-10-25
hi luv the web site! I recently got an 85 r4 in good shape and plan to fix it up. I'm not aware of any r4's officially imported into Canada (mine was built in Spain and imported by the previous owner). I need technical info.. a workshop manual in english or french.. also where to find spares? I'd be glad to hear from anyone who can help...

Owner of 1992 R4TL. Been in Arnhem after 1200 km drive and back safely.
#93: Pedro Lobo, Portugal, 2001-10-17
Hello! Great site!!! The best I've seen on the www!!! It's always full of new stuff!!! Hope it goes for ever like my 1989 R4 GTL "Rodinhas"!! By the way, I would like to put the r5 gtl carb on my 1989 r4 gtl because after looking at both engines (same 1108), I don't find any difference except for the carb to justify the difference in horsepower (r5 49cv/r4 34cv). My question is if it will fit or it will also need the r5 manifold? Anyone have any sugestions about how I can get extra hp without too much mess? Thanks Pedro Lobo

Congrats Pete G on your 40th anniversary trip and also for getting the shop off the ground at last!!!! Now I have all my family's Xmas presents sorted! (little do they know just yet). Have you any details of these nutters doing the World Rally Challenge in an R4GTL (on as we speak??) Regards Bruce.
webmaster comments: I think you keep moving purely so you can put more dots on my world map, there's some kind of secret plan whereby in a few years somebody will link up all the dots and have the key to world domination - or maybe I'm just paranoid. Anyway, regarding the nutters in the rally, yes I've been in touch with them and hope to add some bits to the site about their trek at a later date.

Hi. I hope that this information is useful to all fellow Classic Car enthusiasts. Perhaps you would like to publish it in your next newsletter. Take a look at http://www.restoredclassic.cjb.net which is a website which lists Classic Car Restoration Courses at local Further Education Colleges in the UK. The courses are either Full Time (2/3 days per week) or Part Time (evenings and/or weekends) where students will be able to learn about welding (MIG, TIG, Oxy-Acetylene and Spot), chassis/body repairs, sheet metal fabrication, spray painting and lots more. Well worth a visit? Why not tell your colleagues about it?
#85: Stef Denecker, Belgium, 2001-08-12
Marvellous site! Very nice and pleasant. I was driving a white R4 with closed rearback windows. Still remember those wonderful days. The R4 is really the most useful car ever made! It was a pleasure to drive it and I have still nice memories about it. Maybe it could become a second car for the family now...
#84: james halfpenny, UK, 2001-08-08
great, lots of fun with the site and my new 4gtl
#83: H.de Heer, Holland, 2001-08-04
Great to see so many people loving the R4. I own 3 R4's; a 1977 TL, a 1982 GTL and a 1983 GTL. Reactions very welcome!
webmaster comments: sometimes 2 just ain't enough!
#82: Priska, Switzerland, 2001-07-11
I have an 1983 R4 GTL and I love it. I just discovered that the first R4 was produced on August 3rd. Last year my daughter was born on August 3rd. what a coincidence.
#81: Ginny Shapter, UK, 2001-07-10
Just bought a red R4 GTL through a contact on this site.......a bit nervous and my husband is very sceptical but I'm in need of a nostalgia trip! Probably needing help and advice from the more seasoned owners in the near future!
#80: andrew mcgraa, UK, 2001-06-30
just bought a 1973 R4 from Minehead, 12 mths MOT, absolute bargain £250.00, the one with chrome grille, needs new wings as they usually do, my winter project, see my R4 GTL restoration pics in the tech menu...I got 3 R4s now, still need a van. if anyone's got any pics of early 4s I would be most grateful if you could send them...thanks
#79: fabienne warin, France, 2001-06-27
Am I really the first French person to add their name to this list? My Dad (in Amiens) owns a R4 which he has had since new and my sister and I regularly use it. Great for whizzing along the lanes of Picardy
#78: Rob West, UK, 2001-06-23
Fantastic site! I thought I was completely obsessed by Renault 4's until now....I feel normal again! I've just bought a dashing Red 1986 1.1GTL - rusty, smelly, with front wings hanging off....Gorgeous!!!
#77: Patxi Arroita, Spain, 2001-06-14
I like a lot my R4 and all r4 in the world.
#76: Daniel Taylor, Australia, 2001-05-31
Do you know if any model of the R4 ever came in an auto transmission? I'm looking for a Renault Classic. I own a Renault 19RT.
webmaster comments: Not so far as I'm aware, the manual dash-mounted gears have always been one of the defining characteristics of the cars.
#75: antonio, Italy, 2001-05-27
#74: Pablo, Spain, 2001-05-26
I've got a RENAULT 4 myself. I like your page a lot. It's a real fun. Congratulations! Somebody has written this for me. I'm Spanish and my English is awful.
#73: Shaun the non-mechanic, UK, 2001-05-12
This bloke reckons that my 1982 GTL needs the 'Tappits' adjusting/fixing to the recommended level. What on earth are tappits and how can I get the info on how they should be adjusted. Thoughts anyone?
#72: Sjoerd Vleugel, Netherlands, 2001-05-07
#71: Shaun, UK, 2001-04-26
I'm so happy! I've just bought a light blue R4 which I always wanted. I'm going to call her Sally, after the world's most gorgeous woman, Sally Webster from Coronation St.
#70: bruce pennell, UK, 2001-04-23
Happy Birthday Site! Any chance of a UK R4 @40 celebration / Maybe a pie and a pint somewhere? Maybe with Brian Whiteside in Poole???
#69: Oscar Julian Restrepo, Colombia, 2001-04-23
Congratulations for your first anniversary in Internet. This site it's my favorite about R4's in the world. ¡¡MUCHA SUERTE Y SIGA ADELANTE!!
#68: Pedro Lobo, Portugal, 2001-04-22
I have a 1989 4 GTL Clan and it's the best car I ever had it just goes and goes it no problems. I've had it since new and I would not sell it for any money. This car is like a friend of mine and after 150,000Km and 12 years not once it let me down. I would go to the end of the world with "her"!!!
#67: mike, UK, 2001-04-22
this is a message to the person who has a problem with the new beetle, do u have a problem because u can't afford it? i think so.
webmaster comments: well this is great isn't it, one year after launching this site devoted to Renault 4s, there's a slagging match going on between 2 visitors about the new Beetle. (it's crap anyway)
#66: Jo Fino, UK, 2001-04-18
Hi all, we found the site when the guy who runs it left a note on our windscreen in Tesco's car park. We own a silver C REG R4 GTL. Currently renovating the bodywork and looking for someone to finish it off - anyone interested? We also need new wing mirrors. I think the site is great. Thanks.
#65: bruce, UK, 2001-04-17
Returned home from easter in France with a 1986 R4F4 Van in beige!!! Very sound - a bit tatty inside but trundles well -- even my wife is happy!!
#64: boz groden, UK, 2001-04-14
respect to everyone keepin it real in our leaky bangers/concourse examples. top tip; never take the body off. site enlivens many a wet monday.
#63: Matt Davies, UK, 2001-04-11
I'm so glad that people madder than me are restoring Renault 4's and that there is a growing enthusiasm for these cars - I knew it would happen, I just was never sure when. At last I can sleep at night. Keep up the excellent work everyone. Great web site, thanks. Matt.
#62: Shaun Parker, UK, 2001-04-09
At long last!! I've been searching for a dedicated R4 site for ages, now I've found you. I am looking to buy a R4 (after a 15 year break). I'm fed up with the 2.7 diesel, 4x4 'monster' I currently drive, I just want to go back to my favourite all-time best car. OK, it's true it won't rocket down the outside lane of the motorway and it'll probably have holes in the floor but who cares. Anyone know of one for sale in the South West?
#61: Mike Smith, UK, 2001-03-26
I have just finished restoring (roadworthy condition) my r4gtl after it stood for nearly 4 years, 3 of these in my ownership. I drove it for the first time last week and my girlfriend already wants to trade in her 2 year old clio!!
#60: Justus, Netherlands, 2001-03-17
Hi, this site is great! Compliments! Question: I just bought a 1976 R6L 845cc and I want everything to know about it. Now I keep 'her' 4ever. Technically it is a R4TL, so I like everything of the R4 as well. Does anyone of you got some tips, pics, info or accessories for my Six?
#59: andrew, UK, 2001-03-11
this site keeps getting better and better, good work. If anyone has any pictures of their fours which they can let me have, please email them to me or leave them on my company gallery which will be up and running in the next few days.
#58: Clive [Mr Bean] Young, UK, 2001-03-09
Wonderful site. Anybiby in the west country like to meet up in the summer for a Pastis. and exchange of news on spares etc. My R4 van is in need of complete rebuild but my Plein Air is perfect.
#57: Emma Meredith, UK, 2001-03-07
This site makes me feel normal, cos you're all as mad as me! We're in the minority, which is lucky as we seem to be getting a bit low on affordable R4's.
#56: john armstrong, UK, 2001-02-23
Always happy to hear from R4 fans especially in the UK. I have a 1985 Renault 4 van 6F which I have restored. Have driven it to Norway...Scotland...Denmark...France and Germany.
#55: Daniel Roth, Switzerland, 2001-02-18
Hello R4 friends. Very nice website, funny to visit you. I'm a big enthusiast of the R4 since children-days when my parents owned in all three R4's. Since sixteen years I drive my own R4, a bright-grey 1970 R1123 "Export" with 845 cc./27 hp-engine, four-speed gear-box and 6 volt electric equipment. During the long ownership I restored the car completely and built it up on a factory-new platform. Today it's in original-condition, but almost better than new. In reference to the big work and the rarity of the car in Switzerland, I drive my R4 as a classic only for special events, but with big fun. I hope to hear more from R4 friends all over the world.
#54: diego, Argentina, 2001-02-18
tengo un r4 72, y estoy buscando un modelo 3D para render, dxf, o strata. Una alegria saber de los amantes de la r4 saludos
#53: Adam Whelan, UK, 2001-02-17
I have just bought a R4 and have been shocked by its all round competence. I think this could be a long and happy relationship.
#52: Bob Taylor, UK, 2001-02-15
Had an R4TL (with the handles at the front!) - cool car, ran it into the ground. The end was a bit messy (rusty flapping wings, piston holed) Nice site! I 'specially like the flashy colours...

#50: bH, UK, 2001-02-08
Oh man... In the driveway of a house in a road I must have driven down 500 times, I've just spotted a 1968 R4... looks okayish, flat tyres, grotty as hell etc. Must have been there for years. I can't believe I've never seen it before. Some door knocking is in order, I feel...
#49: Tiennie Riekert, Botswana, 2001-02-08
This is a good idea. I am looking for pistons for R4 type 800-01 engine. Bore diameter is 58mm, Sleeves are still fine. How can help??
#48: christian, Argentina, 2001-02-07
esta pajina es muy buena en cuanto pueda las mando la foto de mi r4. amo paris y a mi r4. chau
#47: Andy Mellor, UK, 2001-01-29
Nice to see some sites dedicated to Renault rather than Citroen (they're just as common as muck!). I always loved French cars as a kid, and still do. For my part, I drive a Nissan (owned by Renault, does that count?), but an R4 or R6 *will* be mine, oh yes.
#46: Bob Gowans, UK, 2001-01-03
Great site - the patchwork mystery car gave me an idea for the paint job on my R4 - acquired for free, and currently becoming a rear wheel drive 2.0 ford engined R4 - now where's my angle grinder? When I finish this one I'll put some pictures on my website. If I can find a decent one cheaply, I'll keep one as standard (ish)
#45: Timo Smits, Netherlands, 2000-12-15
Today I saw this unique site. It's great. Since I bought my first R4 in 1989 (F6, '83), I became more and more convinced and enthusiastic about the qualities of this nice little car. Since then I drove about 250.000km in 10 different R4's. For 3 years I had to do without one, but I fell for a rustfree green example which had only 110.000km and stood still for 6 years. Its condition is really good, and I am happy to drive this R4GTL 1985 again. I went with my previous R4's to Italy, France (10 times or so), Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain. I hope to own a R4F4 once again, (let me know if you know a rustfree example 4 sale) since my last was too bad for repair, but this type is becoming very rare in Holland, where are 2000 R4 left, and their number is decreasing rapidly, because of the inferior french steel and the wet and salty dutch roads. We have an enthusiastic R4 club with 1500 members. It's great that due to the internet R4 lovers all over the world are communicating with each other. R4-ever (I hope)!!!
#44: Oscar Julian Restrepo, Colombia, 2000-12-14
Hello! Your web site it's very fun, and very complete. I suggest that you put in the site the history of Renault 4 and R4 official pics. Congratulations!
#43: norm, UK, 2000-12-13
i have 2 renault 4s, one with an mot but gradually turning into weetabix from the floor up (rust). the other one is sound underneath with a good engine but looks a sack of cack, i may have to build a frankenstein. does any one know where i can get a new rear bumper without parting with o.t.t amounts of cash? p.s. may the 4s be with you.
webmaster comments: I did not receive an email address from you, please let me know if you want to include one to receive replies about the bumper.
#42: Vic H, Netherlands, 2000-12-06
Nice Site, Spectacular Colours... I hope our Dutch R4-club site (under construction) will look as exciting as yours. I am member of this club for nearly 10 years #049. Maybe you have some nice tips for our Club regarding the site?
#41: Frank, Ireland, 2000-11-10

I specially created this egroup, because I would like to share mine experiences. hope to see you soon.....
#38: Esteban Bardi, Argentina, 2000-10-05
I saw your page and I think it's excellent, I'm very proud, because I have one of the most amazing machines that men created, the RENAULT 4. My grandfather had one, model Renault 4s, year 1971. We have had this one for twenty years and my father sold it in 1991. So I always thought my first car gonna be a R4, so a year and a half ago I bought a Renault 4GTL, year 1985 in Buenos Aires, and then I drove 1,700Km to my home with a smile that nobody can erase off my face even today. Of course the car has details, but it's very good in general. I live in San Martín de los Andes, in the province of Neuquén, in the middle of the mountains, with a lot of snow and beautiful places, near the Lanín volcano (100Km), with lakes around, and ski center too. Every day I travel 20Km for work (I'm ski instructor) to Chapelco ski center, and the route is like a rally road. I never used chains in the wheels when snows, I go up to the mountain with my roadrunner Renault 4. You have to see the people faces when I pass them road away...
#37: Ray Watson, Australia, 2000-09-25
Yours is the first site I have sent the entire R4L "Le Taxi" story to. I am at present building a Super R4 with lots of performance parts in a R5 motor out to 1475cc. Thank you for the great site.
#36: Anna, Germany, 2000-07-27
I spend my life with a red R4F6 for 5 years now and it becomes better every day:-) Longlife Love
#35: boz.g., UK, 2000-07-25
R4 body swap victim speaks out. Only took me 1 year! People in Wales call my car a 2cv, which is nice. V.popular with the ladies however, which pisses off their Gti boyfriends. Brightest 4 page ever! Your brain is wrong, but your soul is true. Cheers!
#34: Jason Scrase, UK, 2000-07-25
Belated Birthday greetings to a man now held dear to all R4 owners.... especially the ladies .... Go Gumb! great to see guestbook growing at such a rate ... some far flung addresses well done. The man from del Monte, he say YES!!!!!!! Hope you had a great day (9th July). Now everyone knows when your birthday is think how many birthday messages you'll get next year and how many other belated ones you'll now get!! Happy Birthday from SHADES Productions.
webmaster comments: In typical scrase-style you have forgotten the real date of my birthday; if visitors really want to know that they'll have to plunge deep into the bowels of this site to find out. But as for my wooing of the R4 ladies, do you really think that if I was successful in this department I'd still be bothering to do this ridiculous site? I'm sure a SHADESworthy editor would be better occupied!
#33: Tiago Fortuna Sousa, Portugal, 2000-07-13
This is one of the best sites about Renault 4, and believe in me, I have checked almost all! Congratulations! (I have a Citroen 2CV too! So... I couldn't be an unhappy guy!)
#32: Andre, Italy, 2000-06-11
Hallo, R4 people, how are you all? Peace and freedom 2u all, now and forever... chao, see you around...
#31: Donald 'Dangerous' McDougan, UK, 2000-06-07
Being a sometime Halibut wrestler who cannot drive, I found this site to be of little or no practical relevance. Nonetheless, I am happy to report that it is the most finely crafted, perfectly-honed piece of literature since the autobiography of Barbara Bell Geddes. Your astounding recipe for cranberry souffle has revolutionised my life. It's no exaggeration to say that, without your website, I would not be the upstanding, rehabilitated member of society that I am today. All your mommas, Clive (Mrs)

Always nice to see another enthusiast of an obscure and underrated car - still not as good as my Maestro :)
#26: PhilD, Bangladesh, France, 2000-05-23
Nice site, Pete. May I draw your attention to the horoscopes. Being a Scorpio I was amazed at your insight, especially my use of trumpet navigation but I fundamentally disagree with your comments on barcode flattery. Seldom do I indulge in this, the darkest, of the black arts. You know only too well that this is necessary when there is an imminent frog monsoon. Further to your staggering insight, it is indeed fortunate that I wear a bonnet. In the event of chicken mediation I am well prepared. On a lighter note, why did the French name these cars after BBC radio stations?
#25: Steve Jewell, UK, 2000-05-18
Sorry no computer but like to register my 1986 GTL reg no D274KGL.
update 2001-01-20 - this car has now been bought by Andrew McGraa (entry #16)

At last - a great site to honour a great car! Many thanx Peter for your efforts.
#22: Alfonso Castellano, Italy, 2000-05-17
Compliments for your website!
#21: Udo, Germany, 2000-05-17
Hi, here's a statement from an older enthusiast. Congratulations to your site. It's great and I think we've to do a lot more to rescue our R4. I own one of the the year 1982 in a good condition and it's funny to drive it every day! So I hope it'll go on some years more! Because the wet weather here in Germany corrosion killed nearest all R4! So a hard work is to do to rescue some of them. Hopefully other guys all over the world will do the same! Yours Udo! P.S.: I'll send some photos in the future!
#20: Rich, UK, 2000-05-16
Yo...been meaning to visit this site for a few weeks since I saw the ad in Loot. I have 3 R4's at present.....a 74, a 80 GTL (lhd of Dutch origin) and a 83 van....idea is to make one goodun. The 74 is quite good but engine expired, the GTL is mechanically A1 but bodily dead (tin worm in chassis) and really I don't know why I got the van other than to keep the others company or to store the bits from the GTL as I dismantle it.....I need to borrow or buy some engine lifting gear to swap the donkeys....and if anyone needs a spare...contact me....Regards, Rich

Hi Pete - I love the site - now I know what you've been beavering away at in your spare hours and it all comes clear as regards the T-shirts. I had a tarot reading and it was frighteningly accurate. I don't have any photos but I could offer one of an IVECO. How do you fancy designing a website for IVECO 35-10s? Anyway, congrats on a brilliant site. Lots of Love and Bright Blessings. *Liz*

My one's got stars on it which my wife painted while I was at work. They have stayed on and when I get the engine back together after my no 1 son cooked it and a new (or secondhand wing) which no 2 son dinged we'll be back on the road. Go 4ing

At last a new website, I have sent some pics of my 2 r4s, a 1976 TL in red and a 1986 GTL, both were free. The grey one will be turned into a soft top by next summer, I'll send more pics every week.

I've had 3 of these great little cars and now have one for sale. We use it every day and shall be sorry to see it go. Anyone ready to give it a good home?

You're my brother!

Great site......I thought I was the only person who thought that this was the greatest car ever built! I too have suffered the heartbreak of losing a 4 when mine was written off after a rear end shunt a couple of years ago. I am now trying to find another, so if anyone knows of a shiny example please let me know - I'll travel far and wide for the right one.
update 2000-05-14 - I have finally found a new R4. It's a white GTL 1986 model with only 40,000 miles and a full Renault service history. I have had a constant grin ever since.......anyone fancy a R4 convoy?

Great site Pete, love the horoscopes. Your pictures are scary though.

hey nice site! nice effort! great to see true r4/quatre-L/4wings enthusiasts out there. i have my own 1128 for just over 10 years now, and thanks to the wizards at the workshop who fixed her (yeah, sure, shes a She!) below, she'll run with me for a couple more years (hopefully). i've been to england, france, spain, portugal, italy, czechoslovakia and denmark with her, by myself, with friends, with family and child, and she's always carried passengers and loads of stuff without moaning. so hey! three cheers for all r4s of this world! i'll return in time to submit some still travel footage of r4 in the city, r4 on the road, r4 in the country and r4 at the beach. in the meantime, keep up the good work! k.
(ps: i had a snow white kangoo as a rental on the canaries last fall, and i must say, this one is a worthy heir to the legend - if anything could ever be at all!)
pps: and i'd like to throw in another topic for discussion: on my travels, i have always thought how great it would have been if renault had ever built the r4 with a 4wheel traction. so what does everybody think of the new scenic 4wd?

Great site! It's good to see so many people "in love" with this great car. My 4l was born in 1989, white, only 115K and her name is RODINHAS.

Honoured to be among the early visitors-- great site! Keep it rolling (mainly over sideways whilst cornering)

10 years after and still going strong! A pity about Angelica... maybe a Del Monte drip direct to the carb... might help her ride smoothly on her shocks again! Didn't know there where so many R4 owners out in webland. Bless! They sort of cute. Have fun Gumb.... he say YES!!!!!!

Very nice site, so many options I don't know where to start. Hope to see more pics soon. My R4 have no name, so maybe it's sexless. See my website.

Your humor is real funny - Your limited Web Design skills? I don't even know what a CGI form is: It doesn't matter, anyway I saw a Renault 4 Van last week (so what), It was in two pieces. The front part was in the back garden of the Farmhouse, and the back part was in the front garden, being used as a trailer for another car.

Hi Pete. Nice Site! Keep that R4 running!!!!!!!!!!
#3: Ignacio, Spain, 2000-04-24
My R4 is called 'Bruno', so I think it is a male.
#2: Ben H, UK, 2000-04-24
Gor blimey... colours! Looking good - about time there were more R4 sites around. An R4 about to die? No, surely not, there are few enough of them around as it is... visit my own little scrapyard in the back garden and take away a C reg and a K reg, one out of two for a brave person? I never did do that project involving a 5 Gordini Turbo motor...

Oh all right then, I'll start off, even though signing your own guestbook is a bit desperate. I shall now officially dedicate this site to my first R4, Angelica, as she only has a short time left to live. Donations always welcome!
